Magic has been growing steadily at The Underground since we started offering sanctioned events toward the end of last year. We are regularly seeing 20+ player fields at events. To date we have run Standard, Modern, Vintage, Legacy, Pauper, Two Headed-Giant, Sealed, FNM, Pre-release, Release, Commander/EDH and Booster Draft Events. We find the best fun can be had playing multi-player games like Two Headed Giant and EDH, however Modern Events are popular as there are literally thousands of cards to choose from when constructing a Modern Deck. Pauper Events give the new players an opportunity to compete as these Events only allow common cards – making it easier to construct competitive Decks. We run sactioned Events and upload the results immediately so players get their Planeswalker points without delay. Only EDH does not get sanctioned as we play in large groups per game and not one on one match ups.

If you are an old or new Magic player, come down to The Underground on a Wednesday night for an alternative format or join us on Fridays for FNM Magic Standard Events.  We play casual EDH on Saturdays and casual magic on Sundays. If you don’t want to play, come and trade. We hand out prizes and reward cards to practically everyone who plays in one of our sanctioned Events.

Avacyn Restored is the new set coming out 4th May. A 244 card set and the last set in the Innistrad/Dark Ascension block. We are holding a pre-release event on Sunday the 29th April (Sealed) with the Hellvault (prize support) just waiting to be opened! Pre-bookings are essential as we only have 54 places available and they are going fast. The Avacyn Restored Buy a Box promotion is on till 6th April – we offer a full box of boosters from the new set at 10% discount and you will receive the foil Rare reward card in addition to the booster box. We need your orders soon though.

Each player will receive cards that are kept secret from their opponent. Each card has special terms which, upon accomplishment, will activate, granting you benefits.

Here are some of the event cards:

Objective: Knowing your enemy is the name of the game… Eliminate all the enemy’s troop choices.
Battle Honour: After stopping your enemy from holding any tactical position on the battle field, you have gained the upper hand. The troops holding objectives on the board gain +1 LD. you gain one Kill point for the completion of this objective

Chaos and disorder.No one is safe, friend or foe… bombs and bullets crack the surface of the planet.
Divide the table into 6 even squares. Each table block is a D6 number. At the beginning of the game turn see where the 2 bombs land. S6 AP4 large blast. They land in the center of the block with 3D6 scatter.

Many more objectives that may swing the game in your favour or drain the moral of your opponent.

Bring as many people as possible and we shall have ourselves a battle royal till the night bring what it may.

Now that Magic has returned to the Underground in a big way, we are happy to report that not only do we sell boosters and fat packs and other MTG products, but we offer casual play as well as weekly sanctioned tournaments! We started out on a Wednesday night towards the end of 2011 with casual play and soon realised that there are a whole lot more magic players then we originally anticipated.  We had guys showing up with decks they had not played since Mirrodin as well as guys who had played years ago and were getting back into it. We even got people involved who had never played the game before and are now hooked! We have FREE beginner decks (30 card) for those people who wish to learn to play magic the gathering. If you come to the store on a Wednesday night for a tournament or Sunday afternoon for casual play, we will help you out with whatever questions you may have or help you may need with building decks. We even have an extremely large collection of commons for sale at 50 cents each that many people are finding useful when building pauper decks.

After a month of casual Wednesday nights the Underground held its first MTG event ever! It was a Modern Pauper event and we had 10 players competing. The second event we ran was the following week and this was a Modern tournament also with 10 contestants. For the third event we went with Vintage as this format allowed most of our players to use almost any cards they could find in their collections. 10 contenders for this event and it was finally won with a black/white/red ‘near death experience’ deck which seemed to annoy almost everyone at the event. The fourth event saw our biggest tournament yet wtih 18 contestants slugging it out for the win! It was a Vintage pauper event and was eventually won by a blue/red deck.

We are going to do our best to run non-standard events on Wednesdays and try and alternate between pauper and non pauper events as this allows a lot more people to play as it is easier to build common decks. As we go into our second month of tournaments we look forward to meeting even more magic players and growing our events even larger and larger.

From December we will begin Friday Night Magic and will take a brief break over the festive season before resuming in the new year. Towards the end of January we will be holding the Undergrounds first ever Pre-release event for the new set “Dark Ascension”!
