The Underground shall host their 1st 40K Tournament of 2012. The point size is the ThUg standard; 1750 pts. Entrance is R50 / player.

Each player will receive cards that are kept secret from their opponent. Each card has special terms which, upon accomplishment, will activate, granting you benefits.

Here are some of the event cards:

Objective: Knowing your enemy is the name of the game… Eliminate all the enemy’s troop choices.
Battle Honour: After stopping your enemy from holding any tactical position on the battle field, you have gained the upper hand. The troops holding objectives on the board gain +1 LD. you gain one Kill point for the completion of this objective

Chaos and disorder.No one is safe, friend or foe… bombs and bullets crack the surface of the planet.
Divide the table into 6 even squares. Each table block is a D6 number. At the beginning of the game turn see where the 2 bombs land. S6 AP4 large blast. They land in the center of the block with 3D6 scatter.

Many more objectives that may swing the game in your favour or drain the moral of your opponent.

Let the new year herald the the engine of war. ThUg shall rally the troops for an afternoon of bloodshed and battle. Recruit and veteran alike, battling it out in “Modern Warfare 2″ and surviving the horde in “Killing Floor.”

Bring as many people as possible and we shall have ourselves a battle royal till the night bring what it may.

Magic the gathering is not new to the underground but most people will know about the Underground because of other games like Warhammer. In the past the Underground used to sell MTG cards but never held tournaments or casual magic events.

Now that Magic has returned to the Underground in a big way, we are happy to report that not only do we sell boosters and fat packs and other MTG products, but we offer casual play as well as weekly sanctioned tournaments! We started out on a Wednesday night towards the end of 2011 with casual play and soon realised that there are a whole lot more magic players then we originally anticipated.  We had guys showing up with decks they had not played since Mirrodin as well as guys who had played years ago and were getting back into it. We even got people involved who had never played the game before and are now hooked! We have FREE beginner decks (30 card) for those people who wish to learn to play magic the gathering. If you come to the store on a Wednesday night for a tournament or Sunday afternoon for casual play, we will help you out with whatever questions you may have or help you may need with building decks. We even have an extremely large collection of commons for sale at 50 cents each that many people are finding useful when building pauper decks.

After a month of casual Wednesday nights the Underground held its first MTG event ever! It was a Modern Pauper event and we had 10 players competing. The second event we ran was the following week and this was a Modern tournament also with 10 contestants. For the third event we went with Vintage as this format allowed most of our players to use almost any cards they could find in their collections. 10 contenders for this event and it was finally won with a black/white/red ‘near death experience’ deck which seemed to annoy almost everyone at the event. The fourth event saw our biggest tournament yet wtih 18 contestants slugging it out for the win! It was a Vintage pauper event and was eventually won by a blue/red deck.

We are going to do our best to run non-standard events on Wednesdays and try and alternate between pauper and non pauper events as this allows a lot more people to play as it is easier to build common decks. As we go into our second month of tournaments we look forward to meeting even more magic players and growing our events even larger and larger.

From December we will begin Friday Night Magic and will take a brief break over the festive season before resuming in the new year. Towards the end of January we will be holding the Undergrounds first ever Pre-release event for the new set “Dark Ascension”! I’ve briefly browsed through the codex and got my mind blown by Pierre who was throwing off facts and rules at a rampant growth rate similar to a green MTG deck putting forests out…

It seems there is a GW trend in terms of points costs for standard troops across the board for all new codex releases. God help us when Chaos comes out… but back to the topic at hand…

13 points a warrior with the same stats except a 4+ save and a 5+ reanimation protocols (we’ll be back) which is pretty impressive! Same cost as a marine scout except holding a rapid fire weapon able to glance tanks…

The ghost ark is the dedicated transport of choice in terms of support. It is able to bring back D3 dead Necron’s a turn on a 2+… So a strong choice in a warrior strong army…

The  next thing I noticed is the options available now… Very strong elite type units and lots of cheap ones too…. Wraiths now have 2 wounds! and can be upgraded to carry wargear which drops enemies in base contact to I1… So a possible squad of 6 costing 260 upgraded with 4 attacks each on charge S6 rending will be pretty ruff indeed… Praetorians and Lychguard are the terminators now… packing power weapons and nice wargear… although the warrior spam might be the tactic I would play…

Some serious support guns and skimmers with deadly weapons… S10 AP1 laser beam similar to a blood lance on steroids which hits every model in a unit!!!

The Lords are super cheap! and so sick! My God… The upgrades on them allow you to tailor each one to the role it will play in your army… A very awesome codex! It will be lethal in the hands of a legendary gamer… Yes… Peter van Dyk, Jan Du Toit, Marco Van Zyl , Pierre Cilliers… I’m talking about you lot…

Once I read the codex more and play test the chaps, I will be back with more info
